Summer Intensives
Our purpose-built summer intensive courses provide an opportunity for students to sharpen their reading and writing skills in the off season. Both Creative Writing 101 and Literary Analysis 101 are customized to meet each child’s personal literacy level. Each course includes eight hours of live one-on-one instruction.
All sessions take place online (live video calls via Zoom). To book a summer intensive, please follow these two steps:
Schedule sessions: After reviewing our real-time availability here, reserve eight sessions for your child. Each set of eight sessions can be scheduled at your convenience, though most families choose to book sessions once a week for eight weeks, twice a week for four weeks, or four times a week for two weeks. So long as your child has time to complete the reading and writing assignments (designed to take about one hour) between our sessions, any configuration will work well.

One-on-one tutoring with an Associate Tutor
This course equips rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders with a structured platform for imaginative expression. Celebrating original ideas, young writers will examine multiple storytelling techniques and experiment with a variety of creative voices. In each of the eight hours of live instruction, students will read mentor texts, discuss effective elements of narrative, and draft their own short stories. Receiving professional editing in the form of one-on-one conferencing and written feedback, students will emerge from the course confident in their ability to compose sophisticated and exciting short stories.
One-on-one tutoring with an Associate Tutor
This course equips rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders with skills for success in their high school English and history classes—and wherever else analytical writing is required. Graduating from the realm of “middle school thinking” (observation, simple summary, and plot description), young writers often experience significant cognitive demands when asked to perform “high school thinking” (critical analysis, interpretation, and argument). In each of the eight hours of live instruction, students will read and discuss short stories and essays, strengthen annotation strategies, and implement a proven framework for analytical paragraphing. Receiving professional editing in the form of one-on-one conferencing and written feedback, students will emerge from the course confident in their ability to compose compelling analytical paragraphs.
Custom Enrichment Package
Scheduled weekly or as needed, one-on-one enrichment tutoring sessions are designed around student needs and interests. Our course content is flexible and can be adapted to fit various timelines. All enrichment tutoring features reading and writing assignments between sessions. Frequent topics include:
Summer reading: guided annotation, discussion, and analytical writing practice focused on assigned summer reading texts
Competition intensive: year-round support with writing contests and scholarship essays
Custom package: personalized units of study around specific literary genres (persuasive writing, journalism, personal narrative, poetry, etc.)

All tutoring packages expire one year after the date of purchase. All tutoring packages are transferable between family members, apply across all Active Voice Writing services, and transfer across tutors (meaning each level of discounted pricing applies at the respective associate or founder rate).
